Forgive me, but frankly I find the news depressing, don’t you? Life brings enough of its own challenges without bogging your mind down with someone else’s outlandish behavior. The reality is that the news happens whether we take notice of it or not. Don’t you wonder what this world is coming to? I don’t, but that’s another discussion. Fact is that studies show that when crimes are committed, they affect your health.
According to a 2017 study¹, when a teen lives about ½ a mile from a crime, this creates an increase in a stress hormone, cortisol, which creates a difficulty with sleep. This affects their decision making which can add to those turbulent emotions they already struggle to manage.
High levels of cortisol can cause you stress eating. Stress creates a desire for high-fat, sugar-filled foods because these appear to dampen stress related responses and emotions. That’s why they are considered “comfort” foods.
Various studies linked spikes in violent crime to increased blood pressure, even in safer areas, and show that stress in an adult can trigger diabetes, or if you already have diabetes, make it more difficult to control your blood sugar. All of this is DIS-stress. Distress obviously is damaging. “Stressed people also lose sleep, exercise less, and drink more alcohol, all of which can contribute to excess weight.”
